Its getting a little chicken crazy around the farm. In addition to the 8 chicks we’re raising from eggs, we went ahead and bought 4 Rhode Island Red and 4 Barred Rock hens to give the egg production a jump start. The Reds are 8-10 months old and started laying immediately and the Rocks are 4-8 weeks away from laying (they’re only 5 months old). The transition with the current flock went pretty well. We put them in a transition pen so everyone could get used to each other without direct contact and then one night just put the new girls on a roost in the main hen house and everyone woke up friends, or pretty close to it.
The Reds are home bodies so far. They like the house and haven’t ranged out too far yet. The Rocks are little more curious and like to roam a bit more. The newbies also like to stay out a little later and have missed the automatic door’s closing time so we’ve had to do a little corralling after dark. Hopefully they’ll get on the same schedule soon. We may have to keep the coop door open a little bit longer as well.
Had to add this pic. My dad is living with us now and is the “official” egg collector!
